She holds a master’s degree in colonial history from the National University of Ireland, Galway, and a bachelor’s degree in history from Princeton University. She has experience directing, producing, editing and teaching documentary film. She has filmed from a moving rickshaw in Sanchi, India, held a waterproofing garbage bag gingerly over a lens in Dublin, Ireland, and held the camera steady with a chollo cactus stuck in her foot – Azza brings a positive attitude, creative eyes, and problem solving skills from artistic and academic endeavors. Her documentary work includes: Specks of Dust, a documentary profiling a group of Indian activists fighting human trafficking on the India-Nepal border; Desert Laboratory, a short on the apprentices of the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright; and Refugee, Refugee, a microdocumentary following a Rwandan refugee adjusting to life in the USA. "A Zeppelin of Hope" is a short video about the launch of the airship above the DOX Centre in Prague, in collaboration with Art for Amnesty. It is bears the name, Gulliver, one of the most famous characters in utopian literature. Gulliver serves as a space for reading and public discussions of literature fiction, poetry and critical writing related to the themes of DOX’s exhibitions.
“The Invisible Irish Border” is a multimedia dissertation done as a culminating research for an M.A. degree in Culture & Colonialism at the National University of Ireland, Galway. The June 2016 ‘Brexit’ vote reopened wounds in Northern Ireland. This multimedia project examines the effects of Brexit in Northern Ireland through reportage, academic writing, and filming in Strabane, County Tyrone.
Jigsaw City is a multimedia portrait -- including written reportage and short documentaries -- of different perspectives on racial segregation in St. Louis. Drawing from archival research into the racialized municipality system, conversations with experts and activists, and interviews with residents, the project highlights an often overlooked aspect of a troubled city.
"Refugee, Refugee" is a microdocumentary profiling Eugenia Mapendo's experience as a refugee from Rwanda navigating life in Trenton, New Jersey. Following her routine grocery shopping and cooking, the film captures her recounting her expectations for the United States and finding happiness from her children. Produced under the guidance of acclaimed editor Purcell Carson.
Desert Laboratory is a short film following the lives of apprentices and students of legendary American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Shot at Taliesin West, the winter home and architecture studio of FLW in the Arizona desert, the film explores the inspiring, chaotic, isolated life at this "refuge from the university."
