Project Refuge is a documentary drama series showcasing Natia’s life in search of unique stories about struggle, fear, love, confusion and victory refugees and immigrants share. By featuring additional interviews with professionals in politics, economics, humanitarian aid, philosophy, and psychology, we will analyze the worldwide refugee crisis and its effects using present-day examples.
Supported all aspects of the BUILD Series show's production in addition to acting as a moderator and a writer to the show.
After an estimated 26 million people participated in the protests, the Black Lives Matter movement has become one of the largest in U.S. history. The highly diverse group has been able to cultivate a dialogue as a unified voice to call out against the racial inequality and police brutality, which plagues American law enforcement to this day. This has become too widespread even for the elected officials to ignore.
The COVID-19 pandemic, which has infected more than 300,000 people in New York City, is taking a toll on those who are essential to combat it. As the number of sick doctors and nursers increases due to the lack of PPE, so does the panic and fear for the healthcare system. After one doctor, Colleen Smith, whose video went viral, exposing the harsh reality at the Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, NY, she was quickly silenced by her bosses. Healthcare workers turn to social media to raise awareness, lobby for more supplies and build support during the pandemic.
I explored how the pandemic has exacerbated the longstanding problem with the US mass incarceration system, where privatization and perverse financial incentives are costing human lives as the outbreak of the virus and those infected continues to rise. As the warnings to prevent a humanitarian disaster inside the immigration detention facilities are ignored by ICE, the medically vulnerable to COVID-19 who are stuck behind the bars are afraid that this could be their death sentence.
