Child labor is common on tobacco farms in the United States, where children are exposed to nicotine, toxic pesticides, and other dangers. Human Rights Watch interviewed 141 child tobacco workers, ages 7 to 17. Nearly three-quarters of them reported the sudden onset of serious symptoms while working in tobacco fields and barns, many of which are consistent with acute nicotine poisoning.
Despite the challenges of working in a conservative society like Pakistan, where girls are considered to have lower value than boys, activist Sheena Hadi is advancing their sexual and reproductive health and rights through sexuality education, protecting girls from violence and empowering them to build a future for themselves.
