Request a demoBetty Bastidas is an award-winning filmmaker, photographer and educator based in Brooklyn, NY. Originally from Ecuador, came to the US at the age of nine. She uses filmmaking and photography as social tools to celebrate the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. She is attracted to issues concerning youth, immigration, and exploring the Latino American experience in the US. She is the co-founder of Maracuya Productions, a bi-cultural production company focusing on creating content on the Latino experience and underrepresented communities for non-profits and broadcast. Betty’s film, Can’t Hold Me Back, following 17-year old, Fernando Parraz, from Detorit as he becomes the first in his family to earn a high school diploma was part of the PBS Online Film Festival, aired on PBS Independent Lens, and streamed on VMe and Univision in the fall of 2013. Bred in Brooklyn, Ficalora is the founder of the Bushwick Collective, a community of artists who’ve turned the borough’s Bushwick section in a haven for visually stunning and inherent gritty street art. Like many of the city’s native sons, Ficalora has endured through heavy trauma. Through street art, though, he’s been able to cope. And now he wants others to feel the same way.
Born in Peru, Lorella lost her leg at age 2 in a car accident. Her parents brought her to the US for ongoing medical treatment. At age 10, Lorella and her mother relocated to Connecticut. She excelled in school, but couldn’t qualify for in-state tuition, and lived in fear of deportation. Inspired by other DREAMers she formed a student group to try to change Connecticut’s in-state tuition law.

Groundswell’s all-young male mural team in the Summer Leadership Institute– some w/prior involvement w/the justice system–collaborate to create a mural to raise awareness about “Knowing your Value as Youth of Color” and the relevance/ value our society places on brown youth. The mural celebrates our rich cultural heritage and the self-determination to rise and unite during these tense times.

Can’t Hold Me Back follows Fernando Parraz Jr. as he becomes the first in his family to earn a high school diploma—his ticket out of the struggles of growing up poor in the inner city of Southwest Detroit. The 16-minute documentary is part of American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen, a public media initiative supported by CPB to help local communities across America address the drop out crisis.
