Loay Elbasyouni is a Palestinian-American engineer celebrated for his pivotal role in NASA’s Mars 2020 mission, where he led the electrical and propulsion design for the Ingenuity helicopter, the first aircraft to fly on Mars. Born in Germany and raised in Gaza, he later moved to the U.S. to earn Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Louisville. With extensive expertise across aerospace, automotive, and space industries, he has contributed to breakthrough projects with Blue Origin and others, including electric vehicles and rockets. As the founder of AstraQua, Loay is advancing autonomous AI-driven exploration robotics for space and underwater missions. He has earned multiple accolades, including NASA’s Achievement Award and the Robert J. Collier Trophy, and frequently speaks to inspire young engineers, especially from underrepresented backgrounds.
