Valuable remains of past civilisations in Anatolian lands, especially epitaphs and inscriptions, are of interest to many archaeologists, travellers and adventurers due to the desire of European states to "search for their own past”; a desire that began to take shape in the 17th century. The collection and museology activities that started in the same period further make the Ottoman geography attractive. We know that most of those who came under the pretext of examining and visiting, took the finds they unearth in excavations abroad by various ways and exhibited them in their own museums. The Ottoman Empire tries to protect the ancient artefacts with the "Asar-ı Atika Nizamnamesi" (Ancient Artifacts Regulation), which was written in 1869 and entered into force in 1874. Osman Hamdi Bey, the first Turkish Archaeologist and Museum Director, rearranged the "Asar-ı Atika Regulation" in 1883 and saved the Lagina sanctuary at the last moment from being plundered in 1891.
