Three Days Nonprofit photography and interviews in Natal, Brazil
Like many parents worldwide, Luiz’s mother did not learn about his cleft lip and palate until she gave birth. Before learning about cleft, Luiz’s family was worried because they thought it was a communicable disease. Then, terrified for her child and his future, her local clinic sent her to @hospitalvarelasantiago, a partner of Smile Train. There they informed her that clefts are treatable and Luiz could live a full and happy life! His cleft lip and palate prevented breastfeeding, but the Smile Train partner guided Luiz’s mother through this journey through the Smile Train-supported nutrition program. Despite his facial difference, she has embraced her son and cant wait to see his new smile! After surgery, Luiz will continue with Smile Train and take part in comprehensive cleft care.
