Venezuelan born Cinematographer; Rafael has emerged as a refreshing young talent at the forefront of European independent cinema. His ever-growing love for image-making and storytelling has led him to photograph award winning narrative films and documentaries around the world including the UK, India, Spain, Italy, Jamaica, Croatia, Portugal, Germany and the USA.
Before settling in New York City, Rafael began his journey working as an apprentice to the legendary Venezuelan photographer, Oswaldo Blanco. Rafael then moved to England to pursue a career in filmmaking and enrolled on a master’s course at the London Film School. In his final year, Rafael was mentored by the renowned English cinematographer, Oliver Stapleton who aided his transition from student to working professional. Rafael’s first short film ‘Lack of Sense’ inspired Oscar winning cinematographer Mikolaj Jaroszewicz to work on the project. His next project ‘Doremi’ - a twenty-minute short film he produced and co-directed in 2011 - screened at the 2012 Frontale, Portobello and Aesthetica film festivals. In the following years, Rafael moved to Milan where he joined creative collaborations with well-known artists in the fashion and design world, such as Greta Boldini, PP Møbler, Jasper Morrison, DAMn ° magazine, among others.
