Her work often examines Appalachia, rural America, poverty, grief, resiliency, politics, and how policy directly affects those living in this country. She has spent over a decade documenting a grandmother raising her four grandchildren in Southeast Ohio, and takes special interest in long-form storytelling. McGarvey holds a degree in photojournalism from Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication. I spent two weeks in West Virginia photographing the hunger crisis being experienced on assignment for National Geographic Magazine.
With little public notice and accelerating speed, child poverty fell by 59 percent from 1993 to 2019, according to a comprehensive new analysis that shows the critical role of increased government aid. I traveled to West Virginia, Oklahoma and Texas to photograph this story.
