Maddie McGarvey is a documentary photographer based in Columbus, Ohio. Her work often examines Appalachia, rural America, poverty, grief, resiliency, politics, and how policy directly affects those living in this country. She has spent over a decade documenting a grandmother raising her four grandchildren in Southeast Ohio, and takes special interest in long-form storytelling.
McGarvey holds a degree in photojournalism from Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication. She is a regular contributor to The New York Times, TIME, The Washington Post, National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times Magazine, among others. She has been recognized by Pictures of the Year International, Best of Photojournalism, and as one of TIME’s 51 Instagram Photographers to follow in the USA.
