Request QuoteBorn in Aleppo, Kareem Abeed was a recent Electronics and Communications Engineering university graduate when war broke out in Syria in 2011. He began documenting and sharing the news of local atrocities with his mobile phone and camera and soon found himself at the center of a “Citizen Journalism” movement in the Middle East, reporting from the front lines of violence and conflict in Syria. In 2013, he founded the Aleppo Media Center (AMC), a team of dedicated news correspondents who regularly provide stories and footage from within Syria for such major media outlets as CNN and the BBC. Not limiting himself to news, Kareem collaborated with his AMC colleagues to produce the 2017/18 Emmy-, Peabody- and Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning feature documentary, Last Men in Aleppo. The film has further earned Abeed Oscar and Independent Spirit Award nominations for “Best Documentary Feature,” as well as the International Documentary Association’s Courage Under Fire Award. As one of the leading journalistic voices covering Syria, Abeed’s work has made him the target of an ongoing Russian smear campaign, but he continues to lead the AMC from a confidential location outside his home country.

From the wars in Syria and Afghanistan to the current crisis in Ukraine, the global refugee crisis continues to expand at a dramatic rate. Over 84 million people are currently displaced from their homes—the most in human history—and some experts believe it will become 300 million by 2030. While immediate humanitarian aid is critical, long-term solutions are needed to help these displaced people find and access economic opportunities as they rebuild their lives.

after five months of incessant and senseless shelling, a group of children living in Aleppo start painting the walls of their city. It is an act of protest as well as resistance: a small act that dares to dream of bringing back life in a place that has been humiliated by bombs and bullets, while international powers were watching without doing anything to save lives.
