Island of Refuge
The film documents how people on the island responded to the crisis whilst normal island life continues in the background, away from the media hype. The island is a place of stunning natural beauty, an ironic backdrop to the chaos on the beaches. As the refugee crisis evolves so does the situation on the island. Local people are increasingly under pressure when Europe suddenly turns its back on the people desperately fleeing war, persecution, famine and the most devastating economic hardship. As a long term document of an iconic period in history, Island of Refuge, handles the subject with sensitivity and from a point of first hand experience. The filmmaker not only visited the island at various intervals but also spent a year living on the island getting to know the contributors on a personal level.
