Samantha Griffin, 34, is a doula and owner of DC Metro Maternity, an agency specializing in labor and postpartum support for women of color in DC, Maryland and Virginia. Raised in the suburbs of DC, Samantha became interested in race and gender studies while attending Duke University, leading her to work at various non-profits while volunteering as a doula before making it her full-time career in 2016. Right now, Samantha makes about $85,000 a year.

We went to Kensington, an area considered a “ground zero” of America’s opioid crisis, in the Pennsylvanian city of Philadelphia.

Crowds protesting against hate crimes against Asian Americans appeared in Washington DC following the Atlanta spa shootings. On Tuesday, eight people at three different parlours in and around the US city of Atlanta were killed. Six of the eight victims were women of Asian descent. Atlanta's police chief, Rodney Bryant, said it was too early in the investigation to conclude that Tuesday's shootings had not been a hate crime. Activists and advocates have pointed to an increase in racially-motivated attacks against Asian Americans throughout the pandemic. In late 2020, the UN issued a report detailing an "alarming level" of racially-motivated violence and other hate incidents against Asian Americans.
Millions of Americans who are behind on their rent are now at risk of losing their homes. That's because the US Supreme Court has overturned a federal ban on evictions that was introduced to protect tenants during the pandemic. A government rescue package which was meant to get cash to struggling tenants - and in turn help landlords who say they have mortgages to pay - has only dispersed a fraction of the funds so far. We report from Baltimore where housing advocates warn that one in three tenants are at risk. The BBC contacted the landlord of the Copycat but received no response.
