Mohamed S Kamara was born and raised in Sierra Leone’s capital of Freetown.
The 11 year civil war meant moving from one place to another he attended
different schools. Life was a struggle and after the WASSCE exam he was having
problems at home so at 16, he dropped out of school and went to live on the
streets. He lived on the coastal side of the slum of Susan’s Bay, sewage land made
from rubbish, sleeping in one room with six others or on market tables.
In 2013, he met The Way Film group from WAYout working with ghetto youth and
he left his hustle and started to learn filmmaking.
For the past six years he has been a member of staff at WAYout handling classes in camera and editing and helping members to achieve their creative goals. He also teaches filmmaking in the prison
He began to build his own filmmaking career, working as camera operator, editor
and director on many music promos, Documentary films and NGO films and he was researcher for
Kings College, London, on a film about gang life and culture in Freetown, Co director Observational doc series on
the only vet in Freetown, DOP on a Campaigning documentary
about sex workers with ADVOCAID title Kolonko, Co Director Observational documentary on the fire force, Ghost Killer Director 60 minute drama WAYOUT“As a filmmaker, I am more passionate about telling the untold and forgotten stories,
not only with the aim of establishing my career but also to learn more and give
back to society.”
