Request QuotePietro Germano, a former high school teacher from Balsega di Piné in Trentino (Italy), met the Alphorn fifteen years ago and immediately fell in love. After a course in Brunnen (canton of Schwyz) with master Urs Patscheider, he continued as a self-taught musician, also participating in the Eidgenössisches Jodlerfest, in many locations throughout the Swiss Confederation. He is the only alphorn player in the autonomous province of Trento, where he often performs at local events. The first person to describe the alphorn in detail was the Zurich naturalist Conrad Gessner, in 1555, but a first mention dates back to 1527, in the account book of the Sankt Urban convent.
Life in 20 square metres for two, three, sometimes four weeks: this is the quarantine experienced by some Covid patients who have overcome the most critical phase of the disease but are still positive for the virus. Once discharged from hospital, many of them have found a home in the Michelangelo Hotel, in front of Milan's Central Station. They almost live as recluses, one in each room, until the swab says it is time to go home.
The valley is narrow. It is located a few kilometres from Trento, Italy. It is here that a people live who speak a language derived from the German of the High Middle Ages: they are the Mòcheni, 1,600 people living in the municipalities of Palù/Palai, Fierozzo/Vlarotz and Frassilongo/Garait. Here, the Mòchena language is taught in schools and represents the main element, together with an ancient gastronomic and folkloristic tradition, of the inhabitants' territorial identity. Like many other linguistic minorities, the Mòchena language was subjected to the choices of the fascist government, which imposed the use of Italian and in 1939, together with Nazi Germany, planned a real deportation of the inhabitants.
