David Hands is an award-winning filmmaker living in Cyprus. He began his career as a professional photographer in 1989 and in 1991 he joined a production house and worked as a Director of Photography for commercials. In 1993, at the age of 24, he moved into news and documentaries as a cameraman/editor and sound recordist, firstly working for ABC News (US) during the Bosnian war, before moving to Kenya, where he worked for four years covering major news stories and documentaries in East and Central Africa, mostly for the BBC, Reuters, WTN and Swiss TV. After a short time in Australia, where he filmed his first short fiction movie on film, he moved to Jerusalem, where he worked for five years covering the Middle East region, for Dutch and German TV as a cameraman, editor, and producer.
In 2003, he moved back to Cyprus and became a partner at Crewhouse Media, a film and video production house specializing in documentaries, news production, and short fiction films. He has worked on a number of international documentaries in Cyprus, Israel, Egypt, Sweden, Iceland, Greece, the UK, and Chile.
He has a chapter in the Focal Press publication: Roll! Shooting TV News (USA, 2007) authored by Rich Underwood, was a contributing author in the Jacana Publication: Something to write home about (South Africa, 2005) and was the featured photographer in Anev magazine (Cyprus, 2014).
Aside from his everyday projects as a film-maker, David also leads training workshops for Media professionals, school teachers, as well as film courses for children and he is a regular training consultant for Thomson Foundation. He is also a part-time lecturer in documentary production at the University of Nicosia.
He is a board member of the International Children’s Film Festival of Cyprus and a member of the European Documentary Network and the Directors Guild of Cyprus.
