Over the years, Jane has reported from all over the world for the BBC, LA Times, Voice of America and many more. Her first novel is published in January 2021 by Farafina Books. She has a talent and passion for finding and telling human stories, particularly from the developing world, in beautiful, creative and sometimes experimental ways that put character at the centre of the story - whether through words, audio or film. Jane speaks fluent French, and has specialist knowledge of the West Africa region, language and culture.

In Togo, West Africa, thousands of girls are trafficked every year to work as domestic servants in the capital Lomé, or in Nigeria, Benin or Ghana. For this film, Jane Labous spent time in Lome and rural Togo hearing the stories of the real-life Cinderellas who seek a happy ending.
Part of the ANGELS documentary project, You Are Not Alone documents the intimate confessions of two very different Senegalese women, in a unique African setting where science and superstition, tradition and modernity, religion and divine faith blend into the contemporary culture. Yet their stories are universal, and their hopes, dreams and prayers for a baby will resonate the world over. You Are Not Alone premiered (Eastern Europe) at the St Petersburg International Film Festival in July 2019, then at Mallorca Evolution Film Festival 2019 and Southampton Film Week 2019, where it won Best Documentary. It was also selected for Mediterranean Film Festival, Cannes, 2019, and the Worldwide Women's Film Festival 2020.

ANGELS is an independent documentary project, funded by a grant from the European Journalism Centre, exploring the taboo issue of infertility in Africa. Thousands of women in sub-Saharan Africa are affected by the pain and sadness of infertility, yet infertility is still widely perceived to be a uniquely ‘Western’ problem. The project, including films, essays, photography and audio in English and French, documents how West African women and doctors are determined to shatter taboos around the subject of infertility, offering women opportunities for treatment and support. The ANGELS story has featured on BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service, Geographical and Jeune Afrique. ANGELS won a “Merck More than a Mother” Film Award 2019 in ‘Film Category’ for French-Speaking African Countries.
