Have you ever walked or driven past a burning tyre? What about an abandoned tyre on the side of the road? Or tyres used for jungle justice? Globally, scrap tyres are a major environmental problem with 1.5Billion scrap tyres produced in a year. Years ago, Ifedolapo Runsewe was driving past the Olusosun landfill in Lagos when she discovered that the tyres being burned there released toxic fumes into the air, made “the whole environment unbearable,” and posed a danger to the environment. She decided to do something about the danger to the environment. Ifedolapo is tackling waste disposal issues in Nigeria, and fostering responsible consumption and production through Freetown Waste Management Recycle Limited, a social enterprise focused on the use of recycled waste tyres in Nigeria for the production of reusable, eco-friendly rubber moulded products. In many African countries, the housing crisis is a big deal, and citizens find it hard to get budget-friendly and equally habitable apartments. Marc Arthur Wourougou, a computer scientist and engineer, is bringing solutions to precarious housing problems by providing decent housing for its population in Burkina Faso, through NICE Sarl construction company. Years ago, Marc Arthur Wourougou noticed that people had troubles with commercial activities and accessing basic infrastructure, and the housing crisis in Burkina Faso was deepening. There was only one solution he could come up with: turn to the earth to provide housing for the people and create better accessibility to certain infrastructure. From building affordable houses to hospitals, Marc has been working on building an environmentally friendly construction company in Burkina Faso, and exploiting the land to make it suitable to mitigate the housing challenges many low-income citizens in Burkina Faso face. Built with bricks, NICE Sarl homes offer sustainable constructions that are solid, have different aesthetics, and are eco-friendly. Filmed and produced by JM Films

Under the most difficult circumstances imaginable, innovators in Africa are alleviating the continent’s economic crisis, and addressing distribution challenges and inequalities in their communities and country. This is the story of Nnaemeka Ikegwuonu, Founder and CEO of ColdHubs Limited. In 2013, Nnaemeka Ikegwuonu’s visit to the Farin Gada Market in Jos, Plateau State to report on the cabbage market made him discover food spoilage in marketplaces. Local farmers in Nigeria and many developing countries have been struggling with preservation of their farm produce and experiencing post-harvest food losses. Nnaemeka Ikegwuonu is promoting zero hunger, creating affordable and clean energy, and prolonging the life of perishable food items with ColdHubs, an innovative “plug and play” modular, solar-powered walk-in cold room that offers 24 hours off-grid storage and preservation of food items for local farmers in Nigeria. With his innovation, Nnaemeka is bridging the gap between the people and available resources, and addressing systemic inequalities by providing sustainable solutions to problems peculiar to their communities and countries.
