The National Council: 100 Women Say Their Names Video
The National Council for Incarcerated Women and Girls is calling on President Joe Biden to grant clemency to 100 women in his first 100 days in office. While President Obama used his clemency power more than any of the 10 prior presidents, the unique presidential power of clemency has been historically underutilized. We are encouraged by President Biden’s campaign commitment to continue that precedent, and are urging swift action to do so in the first 100 days in office. As formerly incarcerated women, we believe a prison will never be the place for a woman or a girl to heal and advance her life. We’re hopeful President Biden will honor his campaign commitment to correcting the wrongs of the justice system, and will continue to advocate to decarcerate women and girls. While there are many necessary long-term solutions that need to be implemented, clemency can serve as an immediate remedy to correct the wrongs of the justice system.
