I am primarily interested in freelance video work, ideally on the weekends. I currently work full-time as a hedge fund reporter at FundFire Alts, a trade publication owned by the Financial Times. Any freelance work would have to be unrelated to my current beat. More on me: I am a 2014 Google Journalism Fellow and have reported for a range of outlets, both video and text. My byline has appeared in The Chicago Tribune, The Atlantic, New York Daily News, The Nation, Slate and others, while my investigative work has been honored by Investigative Reporters and Editors (2014 finalist) and the Society for Professional Journalists (2014 finalist). I graduated from the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism in 2014.
The video is password-protected ("trash"). Lauren Singer of Brooklyn hates trash so much that she refuses to buy or use anything that will create it. That means no disposable cups or plastic bags and straws. It also means stocking up on food using canvas bags and glass jars. I shot most of this video and recorded the sound. A CUNY j-school classmate also shot some of the footage.
Two Hasidic women living in Crown Heights make up Bulletproof Stockings, an alt-rock band that plays only for women. The band is breaking the mold in the Hasidic community, where women generally do not sing. I pitched, shot, recorded audio and edited this video. Two CUNY j-school classmates helped me with a second camera.
I pitched this story to The Atlantic after I had secured an interview with Elie Wiesel. I wrote this while in grad school.
Tennessee is arresting new mothers for having used drugs in pregnancy—but in a cruel Catch-22, many can’t get the treatment they need. I pitched and reported this six-month investigation into a controversial Tennessee law with a CUNY classmate. We received funding from the Nation Institute and the Marguerite Casey Foundation, and won awards from Investigative Reporters and Editors and SPJ.
