Croatia has become overwhelmed by refugees after Hungary sealed its border with Serbia, forcing them to head west through the Balkan country in order to make it to more welcoming and prosperous countries in western Europe.
Several hundred thousand refugees, mostly from Syria, have crossed into Greece from Turkey via the Aegean Sea. Risking their lives to reach safety, the unprecedented number of refugees landing on Greece's eastern islands have overwhelmed efforts to help them.
Wrote and photographed for article on halloumi cheese, the national cheese of Cyprus, and how efforts to get it protected product status in the EU could help heal a wound of division on the bitterly divided island.
Story I wrote for Greece's main English-language daily, Ekathimerini. Traveled to Patra, Greece's 3rd largest city and one of its biggest college towns and hung out with college students who told me how they see things with youth unemployment being near 60%.
