The Divine Feminine
Durga puja, the biggest festival in Bengal celebrates Goddess Durga in her many roles. However, women in real life are often discriminated against, especially during menstruation. A large number of people still believe that menstruation is “dirty and impure”. However the Pathuriaghata Pancher Palli Sarbojonin Durgotsob Committee has decided to fight against this regressive thinking through their Durga Puja Installations. Artist Manash Roy chose this opportunity to spread awareness on menstrual hygiene as the concept artist of this committee. He has used bamboo, iron wires, fabric and sunboards to craft an installation that will educate visitors about menstrual hygiene. Kolkata Municipal Corporation Councilor Ellora Saha, who heads the Puja Committee said menstrual awareness is a must for both boys and girls. The campaign is titled: “Now it’s time, let's remove the veil”. It includes an awareness campaign, and sanitary napkin distribution as a part of the Puja programme. According to Saha and Roy the installation got a huge response from the local women, who also took part in this initiative to break taboos. Produced & Reported by Subhajit Naskar
