When Anyurety Castillo was born 24 years ago in the Caribbean province of Limón, her family received a unique and momentous news: she was a boy. Her mother says that no one explained how or why Anyurety had atypical genitalia or possibly manifested unexpected changes during puberty, as finally happened. She studies Dentistry at the University of Costa Rica and is the mother of a child. She is being forced to return to Nicaragua - where she was born and barely knows - six years after serving a prison sentence for a crime she alleges she did not commit.
I scripted and edited this heart-breaking small documentary about Guanacastecan farmers (Pacific Costa Rica) that are dying from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) but also from abandonment, poverty, endless days under the relentless Guanacaste sun, a lack of hydration and ignorance.
