Registered nurse and democratic socialist India Walton sent shockwaves across the country when she defeated 15-year incumbent Byron Brown and won the Buffalo mayoral Democratic primary. However, Brown did not accept defeat. Instead, he launched a write-in campaign for mayor backed by millionaire developers, Trump donors, and members of the political establishment. Under Brown, the poverty rate of Buffalo increased and homeownership fell to 40.6%, 24 points below the national average. Meanwhile, wealthy developers got sweetheart deals from the administration. A prime example: multi-millionaire Nick Sinatra got $1 million worth of property for $1 from Brown’s administration. The general election is on November 2, 2021.
