Bill Hays is a photographer, videographer, musician, commercial multi-engine instrument rated pilot and a 14 CFR Part 107 UAS (drone) pilot and flight instructor. With Bill’s 25 years of experience in professional photography and videography and similar experience as a manned aircraft pilot, it was a natural move for Bill to become a drone pilot specializing in drone photography and videography with his preexisting intimate knowledge of FAA airspace, regulations, and culture. Bill has been a professional drone pilot since 2016. Bill was grandfathered into a Part 107 Certificate because of a Motion Picture and Television FAA 333 exemption he had previously obtained. The aim of my work is to empower communities by connecting their stories. I’ve traveled to the most remote corners of the U.S. filming the impacts of climate change on human lives – families in Arkansas rebuilding after an oil spill, a small town in California’s central valley running out of water. I documented the United Nations conference on climate change in Paris and flew over the Alberta Tar Sands, giving voice to a First Nations community living downstream from one of the worst ecological disasters in the world.
