Karen Toro - Documentary photographer, freelance visual journalist, artist, and educator.
From a documentary and experimental practice, her work explores themes related to human rights, social justice, the environment, education, and gender.
She has produced photo essays on euthanasia, incarcerated individuals, natural disasters, social protests, sexual violence, torture clinics for LGBTQ+ individuals, women's rights, national elections, and more. She has also documented rural communities opposing mining and oil extraction projects, as well as indigenous peoples fighting to reclaim their ancestral territories after being displaced by political conflicts. Karen is a member of the organizations Women Photograph, Diversify Photo, and the Fluxus Foto collective. She has served as producer for Johanna Alarcón's exhibition and book: "Cimarrona: soy negra porque el sol me miró" (Ecuador). She was also the editor of Daniel Merle's book "Mala memoria: diario de un fotógrafo" (Argentina).
Recipient of the Jorge Mantilla Ortega Award in the Photojournalism category in 2020 and a finalist in 2022, she received the National Geographic Society Emergency Fund for Journalists grant in 2020 (Fluxus Foto), was a finalist for the 2019 Brazil Contemporary Art Award, was a fellow of the MUFF Caminos Conjuntos program 2020-2022 at the Center of Photography in Montevideo, Uruguay, and was a beneficiary of the Arts, Culture, and Innovation Promotion Fund in 2021.
Karen has undergone HEFAT (Hostile Environment and First Aid Training) training conducted by Thomson Reuters and Key Objectives in Guatemala, 2022. She collaborates with international news agencies such as Thomson Reuters and Bloomberg, as well as with Diario El País, the digital feminist journalism magazine La Periódica, and has worked with foundations and non-governmental organizations such as Amazon Watch, Amazon Frontlines, Alianza Ceibo, UN Women, IOM, UNHCR, United Nations University, Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil, Plan International, GIZ, Conservation International, Teach for All Ecuador, and the Scalabrinian Mission of Ecuador.
