Born and raised in Venezuela where he began his career as a visual journalist, documenting mainly social issues and violent protests. He has successfully directed, shot and produced over 50 short pieces about the Venezuelan crisis amassing millions of views. Since then he has furthered his studies in documentary filmmaking in New York City. David is a Brooklyn-based director (and sometimes DP and editor) from Melbourne, Australia. Director, Photographer, DP/CameraOperator Content creator My mother was gifted a brownie camera by her brother prior to my having been born. It was then she began documenting every waking moment of life, and I was soon to follow. One of my earliest memories is of a light so bright it seemed like the sun shining straight into my eyes causing a bright start into this world. I now know that was the ‘movie light’ for her 8mm film camera. In High school, I thought taking photos and movies of everything was normal, and was often made fun of for it, until my classmates saw the prints then all wanted copies for themselves. I was an aspiring musician, taking my lunchtime to practice on a piano I didn’t have at home, and stayed after school everyday to do the same. To avoid advanced Algebra (I hated school) I was offered to join the Television department for our township in South Jersey/suburban Philadelphia, since it was based out of our high school. I became a broadcast camera operator and newscaster for a semester, and have held a camera ever since. It started out of high school with shooting weddings and events for a local photographer and photo lab I worked with while going to school for music. Then was hired to shoot for the school. Afterwards,, I spent some years as a photo assistant and digital tech to some of the top image makers in the business, all while shooting on my own. Since then, I’ve incorporated more motion/video to my image making, going out as aCamera Operator/DP. Smoke & Apple Films is an all-female filmmaking team who produce feature-length documentaries as well as short form non-fiction content that parlay powerful storytelling into action. Our directorial debut was "The (Dead Mothers) Club" (a personal film about women who lost their mothers during childhood and the long term impacts of that loss). The film was acquired by HBO in 2014. Our second feature, "The Family I Had" told the story of intra-family violence and juvenile incarceration through a mother's unwavering love for her son who killed her daughter. It was acquired by FilmRise and broadcast on Discovery I.D. after premiering at Tribeca Film Festival in April 2017, won the Special Jury Mention for Best Documentary at Raindance International Film Festival and The Gracie Award for Best Documentary in 2018. Our most recent film, "1275 Days" followed 4 teenagers charged with Felony Murder after an unarmed botched home invasion- it was an official selection at DOCNYC2019. I am a graduate of the University of Southern California with a Masters Degree in Film and Video production. She earned a dual BA in History and International Studies at the City College of New York (CUNY). She began pursuing photography and video in 2006 at the International Center of Photography (ICP). Neha has over 12 years of community organizing experience. She is a documentarian who is committed to bringing visibility to the South Asian diaspora as well as the social movements in and around Queens, New York. Yevgeniy K'banchik is Ukrainian/American award wining independent filmmaker, and a graduate of the Moscow Film School. After completing his formal training in Moscow Film School, K’Banchik worked at Telesto Film Company on Mosfilm studio in Moscow, Russia, as a film director, writer and special effects artist, where he directed two feature films and a few screenplays. Melissa is an award-winning documentary filmmaker originally from the Caribbean island of Antigua. Throughout her career in NYC, Melissa has worked with award-winning documentary filmmakers including Ralf Schmerberg at Radical Media, Academy Award nominated directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady at Loki Films, and Academy Award winning director Alex Gibney at Jigsaw Productions. She co-produced episodes of the Emmy-nominated television documentary series MAKERS for PBS and Nine for IX for ESPN. She has produced behind-the-scenes content for AMC’s Original Series Hell On Wheels and Low Winter Sun. In Antigua, she founded and ran her own production company, and later worked as a freelance production manager on advertising campaigns for H&M and Malibu Rum. Melissa was also supervising producer on “Me on My TV”, an 8-part documentary series broadcasting on the cable network FLOW in Spring/Summer 2017. Melissa directed and produced the feature-length documentary, Silent Music, a portrait of her deaf family which won Best Documentary awards at both the 2014 Maine Deaf Film Festival and the 2012 CaribbeanTales Film Festival, as well as the Audience Choice Award at the 2013 Toronto Deaf Film & Arts Festival. Most recently, Melissa launched The Baby Mini Doc Project, through which she creates artful mini "day in the life" documentaries about families and their littlest ones. First exposed to photography in the early 1980’s, I have always enjoyed capturing images of places I have been and places I want to remember and tell others about. It seems that the camera was always with me no matter where I went. On trips around the state or around the country, photographs documented my travels and memories. The pinnacle of my personal photography was between 2001 and 2005 where I had the unique opportunity to work and live in Antarctica. The amazing scenery and experiences there could only be told to others through photography. With the availability of email and internet I was able to share my adventure through digital images. In 2012 I was awarded a First Place award in News Photography from the New Jersey Press Association and a Second Place award in News Photography from the Pennsylvania Press Association. Journalism is a second career for me. I got my start in public safety and did that for 20 years before jumping over to journalism. I specialize in covering breaking and spot news especially in situations where there is heavy law enforcement presence and or interaction with firefighters or paramedics, which nowadays is just about every large event and or disaster. Speaking the “language” of public safety, understand what is happening I can read the environment and anticipate the pending actions. Having this edge helps me better cover the news and ultimately stay safe. My passion for Visual Media has led to pursuits in film, television, painting, photography and puppetry. I am currently the writer and producer for an international sports recap show called "This Week in WWE". I have been awarded the prize Andalusian of the Future in the category of Culture. I was selected at Berlinale Talents in 2015. My work has been referenced at CineWomen Magazine like an up and coming women independent filmmaker. I’m finishing my next documentary Time Among Olive Trees and the experimental short film Mother and Daughter. Prior to November 2019, i was a staff producer and filmmaker at Great Big Story, CNN's digital network. Before that, I was a staff producer at ABC News and Reuters. My documentaries have also been published by The New York Times, Fusion, The Weather Channel, Al Jazeera English, and the Columbia Journalism Review, among other media outlets. In April, 2015, I was named one of the New York Times' "Selects," a group of filmmakers chosen to direct advertising campaigns for T Brand Studio, the Times' brand marketing unit. My first feature length film chronicled Kosovo's succession from Serbia in the late 2000s. I have since directed several short documentaries that have been award-winning entrants in film festivals throughout North America and Europe. As an educator, I have five years of teaching experience in journalism, digital media and video production at the graduate level. I'm currently an adjunct professor at NYU's graduate institute of journalism.
