Photographer and documentarian Ben Powell’s assignments as a cinematographer have taken him to communities around the world, while his documentary films as a director have focused on landscapes near and dear. His adopted home state of Texas and the obsessive characters (and celebrities) that collect its historical treasures play a central role in “Phil Collins and the Wild Frontier,” which premiered at the 2013 New Orleans Film Festival. His first feature documentary, BARGE, focuses on the culture of towboat workers not far from his home town of Cleveland, Mississippi and premiered at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, going on to win Best Documentary Feature prizes at Indie Memphis and the Dallas International Film Festival. Powell has received received artist grants from the Austin Film Society and the Garrett Scott Documentary Development Grant, and holds a BFA in Film, Animation, and Video from the Rhode Island School of Design.

I apply as part of the the POV Call for Filmmakers to pitch short documentary projects on black-male achievement. I am a documentary filmmaker passionate about stories about people with tunnel vision so passionate they can think of nothing else as possible for their lives. I have filmed rappers, prisoners, painters, and patients with Alzheimers. Since the age of 15 when a high school teacher put a camera in my hands, I have been filming. I am most known for Nobody Knows My Name, the first documentary about women in hip hop, and for Freestyle the Art of Rhyme, which I filmed and co-edited, which aired on VH1. Currently, I teach production and have been making films with my students since 2009. Two projects filmed before my prof life inspire my pitches for PBS: The Path To Power: I Self-Devines Sounds of Low Class Amerika, a short about community activist, rapper, and aerosol artist Chaka Mkali who works developing power with kids in the inner city South neighborhoods in Minneapolis. And, an uncompleted documentary currently being worked into a web-based transmedia project, focused on the Stillwater Poetry filmed for 8 months inside of a mens prison in Stillwater, Minnesota.

Filmmaker Ben Powell aims to tell stories with humility and heart. He is a director and producer whose work has taken him a top mountains in Alaska, aboard barges down the Mississippi, and through Tokyo’s winding streets. His work invites us into deeper knowing of people and places that are often overlooked, subtly celebrating the beauty in the minutiae. Compelled to view the world through a lens since he was old enough to hold a camera, Ben has amassed a body of award winning work that has premiered at film festivals across the country. He began his career as a cinematographer, later going on to direct his best known film, BARGE which documents America’s most industrious waterway and the people who live in it. BARGE premiered at SXSW in 2015, later screening at dozens of other festivals across the country and winning the Grand Jury Prize Documentary Feature at the Dallas International Film Festival and Indie Memphis. It can be viewed on Amazon Prime and iTunes.

I'm Kip Cole and I've been in television and video production for almost 30 years. I started out in news production then moved into the realm of public television where I've produced award-winning documentaries. I was also the producer for "Southern Routes," a magazine-style program featuring short segments on interesting people, places and things to do. I love finding a fascinating, unknown story and developing it into an entertaining and informative piece of video. I enjoy all kinds of stories, but seem to be drawn to the categories of human interest, history, cultural events, civil rights and travel. I started my own production company, Pale Moon Media, four years ago. Since then I've worked on numerous projects, both short and long form. My strengths are writing, producing and the ability to tell an interesting story in a brief amount of time. I enjoy working as part of a team, but also excel as a "one-man band.' I've had extensive technical experience in the areas of computer graphics, videography and video editing. I look forward to the opportunity to become a part of the Storyhunter team.

NOTE: I'D LIKE TO PITCH TO POV FOR SHORT DOC ON BLACK-MALE ACHIEVEMENT & WAS TOLD TO MENTION THAT HERE. THANKS! Shannon Cohn was born and raised in rural Mississippi. The roots and realities of such an upbringing keep her compelled to tell authentic stories that inspire and challenge an audience to look beyond differences to the common threads that make us all human. She produced the short narrative films Sulphur Mountain with Mark Webber, The Memento Mori Project with Paz de la Huerta and The Potential Wives of Norman Mao with George Takei. Shannon produced the award-winning feature documentaries Neurons to Nirvana, Being in the World and 2012 Time for Change with Sting, David Lynch and Ellen Page. She produced and appears on camera in the documentary series, Sea Nation, which follows her and a friend as they sell their possessions and hitchhike on boats across the world. The show currently airs in over 60 countries on Discovery Channel International and National Geographic. Shannon attended the Graduate Film Program at NYUs Tisch School of the Arts and has a law degree from Vanderbilt University.

I am a documentary filmmaker and photographer with international and domestic experience. Most recently I was a Lewis Hine Documentary Fellow in residence for ten months at the United Teen Equality Center in Lowell, Massachusetts, making a series of short documentaries about gang-involved youth working to transform their lives, and the youth workers dedicating their lives to ending violence. I have worked for a variety of organizations domestically and abroad, including a feature-length documentary shot in Liberia (in post-production). I am most interested in storytelling that challenges mainstream perceptions of underrepresented communities, and highlights the work of inspiring organizations and individuals. I also have interests in criminal justice, global health, environmental sustainability, food systems, and wildlife.
