Gary Alvarez is an independent filmmaker based in Los Angeles. He graduated from Chapman University's Dodge College of Film with an M.F.A. in Film Production (Directing) in 2012. Since then he has been working professionally as a writer/producer/director. Born the youngest of three sons to working-class Mexican immigrants in Monterey Park, Gary was raised in the barrios of Bell. At 19 he enrolled in UC Berkeley’s Chicano Studies Program and studied abroad at UNAM before graduating in 2002, after which he returned to Los Angeles and taught for the subsequent 10 years. In 2004 Gary embarked on a journey that changed his career path and ultimately his life: he traveled across Mexico from Tijuana to Cozumel, penning a manuscript that was later adapted into a screenplay. Numerous screenwriting workshops and indie film sets later, he decided to transition into a career as writer/director. Gary’s passion is writing and directing narrative films as well as producing documentaries. With the series boom on Netflix and Amazon Prime, he added writing for television as a personal goal. Currently he is developing a new series, writing his next full-length screenplay and producing a feature documentary based on the Bell political corruption scandal of 2010. From 2015 to 2018, Gary taught screenwriting and film production to young filmmakers from underrepresented communities in Los Angeles and Orange Counties through the Latino Film Institute’s Youth Cinema Project. Since February 2016, Gary has been hosting an internet radio music show called Persistence of Sound every Wednesday evening from Espacio 1839 in Boyle Heights. His aim is to document the stories of local creatives through interviews via the show’s guest DJ segment Patched In.

I am an Indigenous multimedia documentarian born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. To date, I have spoken at USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, UCLA, California State Polytechnic University, Pitzer College, Cal Arts, UC-San Diego, UC-Riverside, UC-Irvine, Occidental College, Northwestern University and University of Oregon. My work presents personal stories of contemporary urban Indians in photography and film to commemorate the legacy of the Indian Relocation program, a U.S. federal program enacted to assimilate American Indians in the 1950s. My overall mission is to combat the idea of the static, stereotypical Indian portrayed so pervasively in all media. I want people to know that Indians are many nations with many stories. My photography portraits stand against prevalent stereotypes of American Indians in popular culture. Having grown up on a tribal reservation in Arizona my experience of Indian life was not reflected in popular culture. My work is to produce authentic portraits and stories of the persistence of Indian life in contemporary contexts. As a storyteller, I develops photographic narratives that illustrate the real stories of American Indians within their communities. My multimedia work reflects the perseverance of American Indian cultural identities today. I wish to produce living portraits of American Indians reflected through an indigenous aesthetic lens. I work as a talent consultant for various television networks. I have professionally produced five award winning films for the Southern California Indian Center’s InterTribal Entertainment multimedia program, co-created film workshops for Native youth, produced PSA’s for Fox Studio’s American Indian Summer Institute program, and co-hosted “Bringing the Circle Together,” a monthly showcase of Indigenous documentaries at the Japanese American National Museum National Center for Preservation of Democracy Tateuchi Forum in Los Angeles. Received a BA in American Indian Studies and Film Television from UCLA.

My name is Juliana, but you can call me Ju. I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and now I'm living in San Diego, California. At age 15 I got my first camera and fell in love with photography. A few years later I started traveling the world looking for something new to do. In 2010, I quit my job as a product designer and went to live in Indonesia, where I started working professionally with outdoor photography and videography. Since then, I've worked with some of the most talented Brazilian surfers and athletes from other sports, producing content for their sponsors and for a Sports/Travel TV channel in Brazil. It's been 8 years since I decided to explore different fields of cinematography including; Fashion, luxury hotel videos, short films and documentaries. In addition, even thought I've always been focused on sports photography the last 4 years I've been expanding my portfolio to some other fields like fashion, travel photography, lifestyle and Fine Art. I always create with a meaningful message because all my inspiration comes from my heart. Inspiring people and spreading the good word is what I like to do the most. I definitely see better through my camera, because I see beauty everywhere. Being able to make special moments last forever and share inspiring stories is one of my biggest motivations.

Carolyne always seeks to find an authentic connection with her subjects and is passionate about the ability of visual storytelling to tell an accurate and powerful narrative. Carolyne began her journey as a photographer and visual storyteller in college; the magic chemistry of a white sheet of paper slowly developing into an image as the chemistry washed over was addicting and she changed her major Fine Art after struggling and failing with a Biology major and not being interested in the career aspects of a History degree. After university Carolyne worked as an assistant to photographer Jay Reilly, a photo editor for Sumner Photography, and assistant editor for photographer Joy Doherty, and she was the Lead BTS Still Photographer on the feature-length film To Save A Life (2009). After taking a journalism class at the local community college, Carolyne was asked if she wanted to intern at the San Diego Union-Tribune where she worked as an intern in the photo department of the News section. Her first brush with photojournalism she was hooked, previously not realizing her love of documentary photography and real-time history could be combined. After the internship, she continued to take classes in journalism and even was the Photo Editor at the Palomar College's student newspaper the Chariot. During this period Carolyne worked as a server and bartender throughout north San Diego County, honing her social skill set, learning how to interact with people, and getting them to like and trust her immediately. With her husband, they started a screen-printing company called Noble Ink where they made the merchandise for local music acts in San Diego. Through her time in the food industry, Carolyne backpacked through Europe, Mexico, and the United States, and also took the time to pursue her own personal projects covering the migrant caravan, wild horse roundups, and the sociological and ecological impact of Burning Man. Once the pandemic hit, Carolyne saw her restaurant close down and all of her freelance photography gigs canceled, she realized it was her one chance to be able to throw herself into studying filmmaking and storytelling. Again she enrolled in classes at her local community college, learning filmmaking, editing, and motion graphics. In the spring of 2020, she began an internship at KOCT - The Voice of North County, a local non-profit public access channel and production house starting as an audio technician and moving up to camera operating, floor directing, and teleprompter. She expanded her skill set to include focus pulling and slate as an Assistant Camera while working on several short films and a feature film in Los Angeles in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Currently, Carolyne works as the Lead Production Staff at KOCT and is the lead Videographer/Editor at San Diego LabRats.
