Bio: Susu Hauser is an award-winning photographer and documentary filmmaker, specializing in telling stories through multimedia. She is known for her ability to capture extraordinary imagery while weaving together impactful narratives that bring awareness to issues and drive viewers to action. After graduating from American University with a B.A. in Visual Media Communications, Susu began her professional career in television with Original Productions on the Emmy Award-winning docu-series, Deadliest Catch. She built a name for herself behind the camera in a highly male-dominated industry, working on other action-oriented television series including Ice Road Truckers, Ax Men, Wicked Tuna, Wild Justice, Chopper Live and Airplane Repo. In 2015, after more than a decade creating content for Discovery Channel, National Geographic, and The History Channel, Susu cofounded The Invisible Lens, a full-service video production company with a mission of creating positive and impactful feature length films. Highlights of this work include a full-length documentary about the undiscovered species in Ethiopia’s Bale Mountain National Park, a cinematic memoir for NASA physicist, George Gloeckler, a short documentary entitled Voices of the Inside Passage which was selected to the 2018 Colorado Environmental Film Festival, a medical docu-series for Detroit’s Top Docs, and innumerable volunteer work with nonprofits across the United States. In 2021, Susu founded her own full-service video production and photography company, Susu Hauser Photography. She has continued her impactful work with local communities and has since produced Dress for Success Triangle's "Women Making Change" fundraising video, as well as, created promotional materials for Sonda Yoga, Living Arts Collective, and the Jonah Garson Campaign. In 2022, she partnered with Photographers Without Borders and Multicolores nonprofits to highlight the empowerment of women through Fair Trade and the artisan market, and has begun field production of her full length documentary "Hands of Change." Although Susu’s personal and professional love of travel has taken her around the world, she currently finds herself enjoying life in Cary, North Carolina with her pup, Kona.

For over a decade I worked as a freelance cinematographer and producer for National Geographic, Discovery Channel, BBC and The History Channel. In that time, I climbed the ladder from production assistant, to coordinator, to associate producer, to assistant camera, and finally to producer and cinematographer. Having fulfilled all these titles, I am a well-rounded filmmaker. With an insatiable thirst for diverse cultures, exotic lands and exploration, I have honed my cinematography through travel and adventure. As co-founder of The Invisible Lens, a husband and wife production company, I filmed with NASA astrophysicist, George Gloeckler in a memoir highlighting the pioneers of space exploration and rise of the Voyager spacecrafts. With a keen interest in environmental conservation, I spent over a year and a half documenting a large carnivore camera trap survey in Ethiopia’s Bale Mountain National Park. I am one of the first and only filmmakers to capture the elusive Abyssinian lion on camera. Most recently, my short documentary about transboundary mining threatening the integrity of the waters between British Columbia and Southeast Alaska, "Voices of the Inside Passage", was selected to the Colorado Environmental Film Festival. I have a passion for filming and producing impactful stories.

I'm an award-winning storyteller based in DC. I have an ability to disarm people, establish trust, and build relationships quickly. That's allowed me to witness some pretty incredible moments — 1/250th of a second at a time. I earned a journalism degree from the University of Florida and began my career in newspapers, where I worked for nearly 15 years. Now, I'm an independent visual journalist who works for a host of clients who appreciate a strong narrative. I love documentary projects, sports culture, and allowing people's personality to come out in portraiture. My primary focus in my personal projects has been on social issues, including poverty, immigration, and how people are affected by the criminal justice system. As a two-time International Women's Media Foundation fellow, I have worked on the US-Mexico border in both Ciudad Juárez and Nogales, Sonora. My work has been recognized by UNICEF, POYi, NPPA's Best of Photojournalism, the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar, the Southern Short Course, the Casey Medals for Meritorious Journalism, and the Alexia Foundation student grant. In February 2017, I was appointed to serve a second term as president of the National Press Photographers Association. I'm an alumna of the Eddie Adams Workshop (Barnstorm XIV) and have volunteered for 14 of the last 16 years as a member of the faculty. I'm also the founder of the online photo community called APhotoADay, which started in 2001 with only two members and has grown to over 2,500 worldwide. We hold an annual photography conference (lovingly called GeekFest) and distribute the Backyard Storytelling Grant to photojournalists working on stories close to home. I'm available for editorial and commercial assignments anywhere you need me to be. CLIENTS INCLUDE: ESPN.com, CNN.com, Mother Jones, Esquire, ProPublica, Inc. I am a New Orleans native-based photographer; but I also work out of Houston, New York, and DC. I am obsessed with portraits. It is all about the process of creating the portrait, and the story behind the portrait. The process of creating the portrait is a mark of true craftsmanship. I try to capture portraits that are honest. I often use black and white photographs to achieve that. I believe black and white photographs allow me to see; to truly see. When color is absent it is all about the architecture of the photograph; the light, the emotion, the tonality, the lines, and the shapes. It allows me to see deeper. If you prefer your photographs to be in color, that’s fine too. My priority is my client. In order to deliver the best possible product to my client, I get to know who they are, what their needs are, and what their vision is.

In December, 2020, I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, with B.A. Anthropology and B.A. Media Studies. I am primarily interested in ethnographic film and photo journalism. The intersection of anthropology and digital content creation converge in a space dedicated to ethical film making with holistic, comprehensive methodology and intent. My intention is not to tell people's stories for them, but rather, be a vessel in helping people tell their own stories, because everyone has a voice. My time at UNC-Greensboro and The University of Cape Town, helped in the acquisition of the necessary videography, editing, and journalism skills required to be successful in the media industry
