I’m an award-winning producer-director with 25 years experience making documentaries, entertainment shows and short videos for non-profit groups like Amnesty International. I was senior producer-director of long form programs at MTV for 5 years. After leaving MTV I produced 3 films for director Michael Apted: “The Long Way Home,” about Russian rocker Boris Grebenshikov’s odyssey to the West, and “Married In America” 1 & 2, an ongoing doc about 9 couples wed in 2001. I also produced-directed “Vis à Vis,” the innovative, interactive PBS doc series. Among my other productions are “The Furious Force Of Rhymes,” a global look at hip-hop as protest music, and “Sarabah,” about Senegalese rapper Sister Fa’s campaign to end female genital cutting. I like telling hidden, character-driven stories with a video camera. I have a passion for people and a dedication to excellence. I've been doing journalism since I was 10 years old and there's not enough I could learn about the art of telling stories. After graduating from the University of Alabama with a degree in telecommunication and film with a focus on sports broadcasting, I decided to share my passion with future generations as a 2013 Teach For America corps member where I taught 7th grade for two years. Kayla Tong (b. 1993) is a cinematographer and director. She was born in colonial Hong Kong, molded by Los Angeles, and briefly called Missouri and Lisbon home in between. After graduating from USC School of Cinematic Arts in 2015, her narrative and documentary work have screened in a number of venues such as The New Yorker Documentary Series, Busan International Film Festival, New Orleans Film Festival, LA Asian Pacific Film Festival, and LA Shorts Fest. Kayla is a Busan’s Asian Film Academy's cinematography fellow, a Visual Communications’s Armed with a Camera Fellowship directing fellow. Kayla's rootless upbringing and encounters with people from around the world inform the themes of much of her work, telling stories of diaspora and displacement. I'm a Brooklyn based video journalist. I have been shooting, editing and producing documentary tv, film, and web content for the past 10 years.
