Gabriella Nova (f.k.a. Parsons) is a Midwest-born-and-raised 90s kid, visual storyteller and freelance documentary filmmaker based in Austin, Texas. She is currently a seasonal producer for SXSW Film Festival. Gabriella’s work centers on community empowerment, social justice, identity and belonging. Whether producing a short doc or assisting clients with long-term communications plans, Gabriella loves working with teams to bring stories from ideation to completion. Formerly, she worked as an Emerging Media Producer for Nebraska Public Media, Nebraska’s PBS and NPR. Gabriella holds a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications. During her time at CoJMC, Gabriella was an award-winning fellow of the Global Eyewitness photojournalism program, which she and other alums have worked with college faculty to reform since 2020. Amy Bench is a cinematographer and filmmaker based in Austin, Texas. She took a circuitous path to filmmaking, first working as an engineer for Eastman Kodak before pursuing an MFA in directing at UT (2010). She has been twice nominated for the Kodak Excellence in Cinematography Award and has won grants from the International Documentary Association (IDA), Austin Film Society (Texas Filmmaker’s Production Fund), Women in Film- Dallas, and the Department of Education’s Jacob K. Davits Fellowship, and is currently a member of the Austin Contemporary’s multidisciplinary artist group The Crit Group. She was recently named a “DP on the Rise” by Paste Magazine. As a cinematographer her credits include TRANS IN AMERICA (Emmy, 2019), UPROOTED (HBO Max, NAACP Image Award nomination, 2022), BAD AT DANCING (Silver Bear, Berlinale, 2015), HOLY HELL (Sundance, 2016) and RUNNING WITH BETO (SXSW, 2019). Her camera work has won an Emmy, 2 Webby awards, and has screened at festivals including Berlin, SXSW, Sundance, The New York Film Festival, and at MOMA/PS1. She is the Director of Photography on three features premiering at SXSW in March: Mama Bears (dir Daresha Kyi- Chavela), Lover Beloved (dir Michael Tully- Ping Pong Summer), and Shouting Down Midnight (dir Gretchen Stoeltje-Bionic Beauty Salon). Additionally, Amy directed the short documentary MORE THAN I REMEMBER, which received the IDA Enterprise Fund from the International Documentary Association and is premiering at SXSW in March 2022. Her 2019 film A LINE BIRDS CANNOT SEE won awards at SXSW, Cleveland, Oak Cliff Film Festival, Bend Film Festival, and IndieGrits, and is currently featured online on THE NEW YORKER. Bex Rodriguez is a filmmaker based in Austin, Texas. As a full-time freelancer since 2013, Bex has worked on countless docs, commercials and music videos. Recently, Bex worked as a DP for Hulu, NPR, AT&T, The Daily Show, and most recently HBO. Bex’s goals are shooting and directing documentaries with a focus on women and minorities. After a few months, I was promoted to full-time multimedia journalist covering international border issues such as the shooting of a Department of Homeland Security helicopter near the Rio Grande River.
