Mkhululi Sibanda Thobela(39) is a visual Journalist interested in contemporary issues such as common labourers, human migration, human rights violations, political history and social injustice. Thobela seeks psychological and aesthetics elements when photographing subjects to bring out meaning and emotion of human life. The relationship created between the photograph and the viewer continues to shape Thobela’s photography. It is in this relationship between the viewer and the elements in the image, which he feels may instigate change, respect of rule of law as well as bring about capacity enhancement projects in communities. I am a trained female journalist with 21 years’ progressive experience in reporting, editing, media liaison, communications and NGO work. I am a multi-media freelance journalist based in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe,with over 15 years’ experience in print and radio journalism. I initially pursued a career in teaching, but after an increasing interest in journalism in the intervening years, I went back to college and graduated from a public journalism school in the country in 2002. I share the view of famous British playwright Tom Stoppard who once said: “I still believe that if your aim is to change the world, journalism is a more immediate short-term weapon.” In spite of a seemingly endless and much reported cycle of socioeconomic problems, I believe there is still a lot to report on in Zimbabwe, especially from Bulawayo, the country's second biggest city where I am based. I am a multi-media investigative journalist and fact checker with more than ten years’ experience. I write for the biggest privately-owned daily paper, The Newsday, and its sister weekly, The Standard, as well as The Washington Post. Before joining the Newsday and The Standard, I have been a news editor for the Masvingo Mirror, the counttry’s biggest privately-owned weekly newspaper for the Zimbabwean southern region. I have also corresponded for a privately owned Sub-Saharan radio station, Radio Voice of the People (VOP). As someone working for the private media in Zimbabwe, I have been harassed by both state security agents and ruling ZANU PF party members and officials over my critical reporting. I am the current winner of the UNICEF Zimbabwe Child journalist of the year award (Oct 2019) as well winner of the Haller Prize for Development Journalism award in sub-Saharan Africa (2016). In 2015, I also won the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association’s (ZimRights) Best Human Rights Defender Journalist of the Year award. I have been a fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford (Oct 2017-March 2018) and I hold a Msc in Media and Society Studies from the Midlands State University in Zimbabwe. David Muponda, aged 36, I was raised by strict parents who did not believe children must watch TV or films. Storytelling took central stage at home. As a young man, I have had a strong passion for the camera. It fascinates me. I started off using VHS camera at the age of 14 then went on to use High 8. I then turned professional. Since then I have worked on different projects from social to commercial filming. I have been engaged on shorts, drama, feature and documentary film making. In this part of the world where funding has been hard to come by, I have had to go out of my way to mobilize resources to produce the most of my productions. This has seen most of my ideas which were on paper coming to light. Through the lens of a camera I love to explore on my surroundings, connecting the untold story and that of the marginalized people.
