A study commissioned by Basic Needs Basic Rights Kenya in partnership with CBM, Nous Cims, Chuka University and Kenyatta University in 2018/19 revealed that students and faculty within the university community often face a mix of stressors, and they lack positive coping mechanisms. This makes them prone to developing mental health problems. Working in collaboration with Kenyatta and Chuka Universities, the Mental Health and Wellbeing on Camus program was developed to improve the provision of mental health support services within the two universities. The program facilitated initiatives to improve access to treatment including clinical and low-intensity psychosocial therapies to both students and staff.
People with psychosocial disabilities in Kajiado County were severely affected by the COVID-19 global pandemic, negatively impacting their access to information, psychotherapy and psychiatric medication, and social protection services. Working through the community health structure, service users were identified and assisted with social support. A disability registration drive was also organized in partnership with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, to ensure that Service Users have access to Government social protection services. For sustainability, Service Users were empowered with practical skills for income generation.
Millions of Kenyans lost their livelihood opportunities because of the COVID-19 global pandemic, with some of the most affected groups being persons living with psychosocial, intellectual and cognitive disabilities, as well as health workers in Kajiado and Bungoma Counties. Working through the community health structure, Basic Needs Kenya in partnership with CBM, identified the most vulnerable households and assisted with social support. The emergency intervention offered a reprieve albeit temporary. There is a need for more long-term intervention to sustain the gains made.
