Local Government Elections in 2021 South Africa saw the ruling party the ANC lose much traction with the electorate. For the first time since the advent of our democracy, the ANC was weakened to the extent that it needed to start looking at opportunities to form coalitions with other political parties. I was on the floor of the Elections Results Centre crossing live when I caught the Chairperson of the ANC.

It was the local government elections in 2021, South Africa and the results were like nothing South Africa had ever seen before. The parties two biggest parties, namely the Democratic Alliance and the African National Congress saw declines in their numbers and new entrants who were smaller parties were picking up speed and able to set the tone of negotiations for coalitions with other parties. I was on the field at the Results Operations Centre and had a chat with the President of the newly formed Patriotic Alliance, Gayton McKenzie.

Smaller parties see growth in the 2021 Local Government Elections

Stanley Okonye, joined the Africa Desk of TRT World in November 2017 as a Planning Producer. He is an accomplished Television News Producer and newsroom manager. He worked with some of the major television stations in Nigeria including TVC News where he played a role in the startup of the local station in 2007 as the first News Editor and newsroom manager. He also contributed to the takeoff of the International arm, TVC News Africa in 2012 where he managed the Output Desk overseeing the coverage of A list events on the continent including the Westgate Attack in Kenya and the burial of Nelson Mandela in 2013. He was a field producer for TVC News Africa at the Africa Union Summits in 2016 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Kigali, Rwanda as well as the 2016 Ghana presidential election. He coordinated the coverage of 2011 and 2015 general elections in Nigeria for TVC News
