Communities in Laikipia, northern Kenya are pastoralists, But for more than a decade now, an invasive species of cactus plant, Opuntia, has remained a thorn in their flesh. The plant is causing deaths to livestock while suppressing pasture growth, it is also causing injuries to livestock when they feed on it. A women's group in Laikipia decided to try adding value to the menace. As the plant is rich in vitamins C and A and is an antioxidant that helps prevent cancers and other lifestyle diseases, high in minerals such as magnesium, calcium and iron, consuming it seemed logical. They now make sweet wine, jam, juice as well as yoghurt from the troublesome cacti.
