Through his company Breaking Branches Pictures (est. 1996), Christian has received over 35 filmmaking awards for his work as a Director, Cinematographer and Editor. He has over 20 directing credits, and many of his films have been distributed, screened internationally at film festivals, and have been broadcast regionally on PBS. Christian has directed and produced critically acclaimed and award-winning films, including the documentary features Alzira’s Story (2000), 41 (2007) and Raising Matty Christian (2014), and the fully improvised dramedy feature Getting Out of Rhode Island (2003). His short documentaries such as Zach: A Film about Epilepsy (2009), Thinking Through the Drink (2010) REVEALED: Portraits Beneath One’s Surface (2011), Fred and Emile (2015), Fueling Fierce: The Shannon Heil Story (2016) and Love Is the Energy (2019), have also received international attention. I am an award-winning independent filmmaker from Cape Town, South Africa. My career started after completing my film and television studies at Monash University, South Africa in 2004. My films infuse music, history, politics, and art with geopolitical current affairs, examining issues and unknown stories to create narratives in impermanent settings.
