After receiving his doctorate in sociology at the University of Paris X, France, Gérard Schmidt created and managed a film company whose mission was to produce and distribute cultural documentaries and short films with an international focus. I am an award-winning independent filmmaker from Cape Town, South Africa. My career started after completing my film and television studies at Monash University, South Africa in 2004. My films infuse music, history, politics, and art with geopolitical current affairs, examining issues and unknown stories to create narratives in impermanent settings. Between 2004-2008 I worked for the South African Broadcasting Corporation and many other production companies producing, shooting and directing high-end educational documentaries, magazine shows and music videos that have been featured on numerous international television channels including Al Jazeera, ESPN International, ZDF Germany, TRT-Turkey and HULU.  In 2009 I established Azania Rizing, a production company that aims to inspire young people through creative storytelling about Africa and the African Diaspora.  I have directed over 10 feature documentary films shot between five continents including over 20 short current affairs news inserts. I’ve also guest lectured at various international universities including the University of Cape Town, University of Johannesburg, University of Pennsylvania, University of Sao Paulo, Johns Hopkins University, Tulane University, University of West Indies, and the University of Toronto. I am an Italy-born freelance multimedia journalist based in Brooklyn, NY. I've covered various national stories for Fusion TV and the Juvenile Justice Information Exchange, shooting and editing video news stories and short documentaries. I covered the Dakota Access Pipeline controversy in 2016, self-producing an award winning 16-minute documentary. I have over 5 years of professional experience in Post Production. I formerly served as the in-house Lead Editor for OS Studios, a full service agency specializing in eSports and gaming content. In my role I was creative lead for all things post-production, and while I was managing multiple projects with quick-turn deadlines, I was also creating video content that is impactful, engaging, and entertaining. Before my time at OS, I was the Junior Editor for an Atlanta based production company called Craig Miller Productions, where I created a variety of videos across a multitude of clients, ranging from large corporations such as Southern Company, to small-town tourist attractions in Henry County, Georgia.
