São Paulo, State of São Paulo, Brazil
$500 - $5000
Me: André Lucas was born in São Paulo / SP - Brazil, in September 1991.
He started to photograph in his childhood helping his parents in events, as a general assistant, always with an analog camera and a VHS camcorder in his hands.
-
Where he lived, he always witnessed abuse in many ways and always wanted to show it to people. In the fourth grade of elementary school, returning from school he saw a Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM) aiming a revolver at a street vendor, while others were dropping bombs of moral effect. That gas left both his parents and himself ill.
-
It was not an easy time, he faced several problems at school, he did not understand why he was beaten by the teacher for not knowing specific subjects, he was very humiliated and heard in front of the whole class: "Do not walk with him, there will be no future and it sucks ". And he was beaten.
-
If he moved away from friends, family and isolated he realized alone: I need to study!
When his desire to photograph became greater and in 2010 he bought his first DSLR camera, he started photographic studies on his own.
At the time, he finished the supplement at SESI.
-
-
In 2013, he contributed to a daily news agency and covered the main demonstrations and politicians of the time. He also covered football, in addition to World Cup 2014 events.
André also covered the water crisis in the state of São Paulo until 2015, where he began to change his path in photography.
Then he started to cover the student movement for the website VICE Brasil and for the news agency, where he won the @vladimirherzog 2016 award.
Creator and member of the "Hunters of Stories and Shared Views" - @ chocdocumental, he started to produce complete materials with photo, video and text, both on his page and on the VICE website.
-
-
In 2018, André was already studying lighting for portraits, when he started working as a freelance for the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo and covering for the websites UOL, The Guardian, Deutsche Presse Agentur and also for Reuters.
-
-
In 2019, he was in Brumadinho / MG on the coverage for the El País website of the environmental crime caused by the breach of a VALE dam.
-
-
But nobody expected what would become 2020, and neither did André.
Always looking to photograph reality, he closely followed the effort of São Paulo's favelas to prevent Covid-19, visited the @emilioribas ICU, and months of waiting managed to visit the village of Jaraguá, causing more awareness among those he knew.
