Liliana Soto is a multi-award winning Multi-Media/investigative Journalist and News Anchor with a Bachelor’s degree from The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. Liliana worked as a multi-media journalist and weekend news anchor for Univision Arizona from October 2015 to January 2018. During her time at Univision AZ she earned recognition by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with eight Emmys. One of the most prominent Emmys was for her investigative report on a case of abuse of authority and discrimination by officers in the Phoenix police department against a Hispanic woman. Throughout her career in Phoenix, Liliana demonstrated outstanding work on both local and national platforms From June 2014 to October 2015, Liliana worked for Univision Austin as a multi-media journalist and fill-in anchor. She covered politics, education, immigration, and health. During her time in Austin, many of her stories were showcased in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and national platforms. Liliana was also assigned to news Correspondent for Texas regional newscast "Primera Edición"​ & "Conexión Texas" based in Houston. In Austin, Liliana led special investigative reports and stories by partnering with Austin’s American Statesman newspaper on a report about the deaths of homeless people in Austin. Liliana earned an Emmy and their digital partnership earned national recognition by the Online Journalism Awards in 2016. Thomas Machowicz is an award winning filmmaker and photographer based in Phoenix, Arizona. As both an undergraduate and graduate journalism student at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, I have focused on refugee and migration topics. I am trained and have a degree in Broadcast Journalism and have worked for 3 news stations, two in Arizona, one in Nebraska. I enjoy telling long-form, emotional stories that help my viewers connect with the subject. I have completed 3 documentaries in the past 3 years and film, edit, produce all on my own. My first documentary, Speak, followed two Somali refugee students through the public school experience in Arizona. My second and third documentaries were conducted in Arizona and Croatia, where I was an assistant producer for a State Department Embassy project. The story topics explored Syrian Refugees using the Balkan countries as a route to Europe. As I approach my graduate graduation in May of 2018, I am excited and interested to find news and media organizations that find a passion in the same stories I do.

My passion for communication and media began when I was a high schooler. I decided to major in English Translation as an undergraduate student. I mustered up all my courage and efforts to master my language skills. I then applied for a Fulbright Scholarship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While there, volunteering for radio stations which facilitated my way of being admitted to the journalism graduate program at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. There, I was news director at KVSC 88.1 FM and produced a lot of podcasts and audio packages as well as written stories. I also gained a lot of hands-on experience in video-shooting and editing by reporting for the school's television station i.e. UTVS. I dare to say that my skills are as competitive as that of a reporter for a public/private television or radio station. Valeria Fernández is a multimedia journalist with more than a decade of experience as bilingual documentary producer and journalist covering Arizona’s immigrant community and the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. Her award-winning, independent reporting has taken her to places such as Guatemala, Mexico, Brazil and Uruguay, and has focused on topics ranging from migrant kidnappings to racial profiling and discrimination against migrant women in jail. Fernández also contributes to CNN Spanish and Al Jazeera English, and has been published by newsrooms such as The Washington Post and The Associated Press Spanish. In 2012, she completed her first documentary, “Two Americans,” which contrasts enforcement actions by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and a 9-year-old girl – a U.S. citizen – trying to stop deportation of her parents. In 2014, she co-directed, filmed and edited six short films for an international web documentary, “Connected Walls,” on life at the U.S.-Mexico border.

As someone who came to this country from India, I try to reveal parts of America that may seem ordinary to many at first but that, once exposed, touch the soul. I strive to bring intimacy and beauty to every story that I cover – whether in still or video photography, print or online. This point of view has served me well as I have built a strong track record for both enterprise work and breaking news stories in the communities where I have worked. Before coming to Arizona, I worked in Georgia for nine years. While there, I documented the lives of migrant farmworkers and followed the state National Guard, who was at the time preparing for war in Iraq. I traveled to Iraq twice and also responded to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, where I was part of a Pulitzer Prize winning team covering the gruesome aftermath of the storm. Now here at the Arizona Republic, I am currently working on a number of projects in addition to my daily assignments. I am working to tell the stories of undocumented Mexican families juxtaposed with the frequent use of excessive force by the Border Patrol and the complexity of the movement to reform immigration laws and policies. Our in-depth project has put a lot of pressure on the Department of Homeland Security and I believe it is part of the reason that they have written a new book of policies on how to respond to migrants encountered in the desert. I have also been asked to cover a number of ongoing social issues including Arizona’s embattled Child Protective Services department, laws that target the LGBTQ community and heroin use in our region. These special projects often require me to dedicate personal time in order to do them justice, but the work is worthwhile as it feeds my passion for the craft of photojournalism and telling compelling stories.ACHIEVEMENTS AND AWARDS Rocky Mountain Emmy Award 2011-2012 - “Saving Arizona's Children" Pulitzer Prize for Public Service Part of the 2006 (Biloxi, Miss.) With over 20 Official Film Festival selections in the past three years Matty Steinkamp is not one to take a break from creating. As head creative at Mango Skies outfit in Phoenix, AZ Matty Steinkamp has self produced, filmed, and directed now 2 feature documentary films and 4 short films since 2015. Most notably "The Process" with Calais Campbell of the Jacksonville Jaguars the aired on ESPN last fall in 2017 as well as USA today and Yahoo sports. Recently Matty has been working hard with several NFL affiliates along with MLB to produce several online films and series. Liz Scherffius is a trilingual freelance journalist and a Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting fellow. She specializes in documentary film and investigative data journalism. As a video journalist for the BBC, she covered immigration, civil liberties, and women's issues. Originally from southwestern Montana, Liz pursued Latin American Studies as an undergraduate at Pitzer College, and is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Upon graduation, she began her journalism career in Argentina and Ecuador. As a Master’s candidate at the Columbia School of Journalism, she made a 30-minute documentary film about refugee resettlement in New York City. The film, A Table for All, was a 2018 Official Selection of the NYC Independent Film Festival. Liz completed her Master's degree in December 2017 and she is based in Washington, D.C and Tucson, AZ.
