My name is Nima Khalilian and I am a videographer, and soon a storyhunter. Ever since I was a kid, I have always had an interest in the odd and thought provoking. I enjoy telling stories that depict triumph over adversity, a story that inspires and bewilders at the same time. The infinite study of the human condition is an important topic that sometimes is best told through a visual medium. These are the kinds of stories I strive to "hunt" for. Over the last 6 months I have been traveling through Latin America. Recently I decided to settle down for a bit in Medellin, Colombia. The city of eternal spring as it is referred to by locals and travelers alike, is a city with a tragic past, but a bright and optimistic future. Last year it was awarded the most innovative city of the year beating out Tel Aviv and New York. Medellin is the perfect backdrop to tell tales of tragedy and struggle coupled with perseverance and the triumph of the human spirit. My experience working in a newsroom for nearly 9 years has given me the skills to express myself through the video platform. My diversity in storytelling is a strength that I hope to bring to the Storyhunter team.

Hi, I am applying through POV under the American Promise assignment. I'm Sam Hampton PhD, co-founder of Docs In Progress, a nonprofit located in the DC metro area dedicated to creating community through documentary. I have two recent films. Hidden Books the Art of Kumi Korf, about a Japanese American artist, received the CINE Golden Eagle Award. Mr. Stokes' Mission, the story of a Civil Rights educator and plaintiff of Brown v. Board of Education, has played at many film festivals and schools. My current project is a one-hour documentary titled, Transcending Surgeon. The film is about trauma surgeon Dr. Edward Cornwell III, who is the Chief of Surgery at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC. The film explores Dr. Cornwell's family upbringing, mentors, education and other guiding forces that led to his successful career. It does so in the context of African American pioneers in medicine, and that many of his patients represent the realities of another side of urban African American life, communities beset by poverty, inadequate education and and violence. Transcending Surgeon is a story that connects with viewers in a way that is real and thought provoking.

Over the past three years, I have produced well over 100 videos for a wide variety of clients. My most notable work is producing, filming and editing the television show, VSU Today, and filming a series of commercials for Virginia State University. Each video Ive created has been strategically developed into a unique communication solution for each clients needs. Im an award-winning filmmaker, author and journalist. Ive used my skills as a storyteller in a variety of media: producing hours of live radio, as well as short sound-rich pieces, creating documentaries and short video features, making photo essays and slide shows, putting together multimedia pieces and writing articles. Im also the published author of two books of short stories. At the moment Im focused in videography. Two years ago I earned a masters degree from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism with emphasis in documentary production. I hunt for stories that need to be told so they can that create awareness about political issues and human matters; stories that surprise us and show us our differences and similarities, our greatness, fragility and beauty; stories able to touch an audience and motivate them into action.

I am a constant observer and experiencer, one who notices the little things. I hunt for the little detail in every story no matter what topic or form, that connects all of us through human nature. Jim Choi is an award-winning director, cinematographer, and sound recordist. As a graduate of the Painting Dept. at the Rhode Island School of Design, Choi has always brought a fine artist’s perspective to storytelling in his documentary films. Having formerly worked in the Public Television Department of the Center for Asian American Media, he has dedicated his career to the documentation of the Asian American experience and its representation to the broader public. Choi directed and filmed Changing Season on the Masumoto Family Farm, which aired on PBS in 2016. Changing Season witnesses the multi-generational Masumoto peach farm owner David “Mas” Masumoto and his successional relation with his daughter Nikiko.

Josh Davidsburg is an award-winning broadcast journalist, documentary filmmaker and 2001 Merrill College alumnus. Following his education, Josh started his career at WMDT in Salisbury; three years later, he moved to Fort Myers, Florida, where he worked for NBC-2 WBBH for two years. He then returned home to work for WBAL in Baltimore and Maryland Public Television, where he reported for two years. His first feature-length documentary Queen of the Capital screened at film festivals across the country and has been picked up for distribution. Josh also teaches documentary and broadcast journalism as a full-time lecturer at the University of Maryland, College Park, Philip Merrill College of Journalism. He is currently in pre-production for his next feature film.
