Sebastian Diaz is a New York based filmmaker and Emmy awarded editor (THE AND web series) originally from Mexico. His short documentary TOÑITA'S was a part of MoMA Documentary Fortnight 2014. His feature doc BRILLIANT SOIL was awarded the Material Culture & Archeology Film Prize at RAI Fest of Ethnographic Film, Edinburgh 2011. Sebastian photographed and edited the award winning documentary TIJUANEADOS ANONYMOUS. He co-founded BULBO Art Collective, which produced a documentary series broadcast in US and Mexico about Tijuana-San Diego border culture where he was raised (Univision and Channel 22). His work has been exhibited internationally at MoMA (NY), ARCO (Madrid), The MAK Museum (Vienna), InSite_05 (Tijuana-San Diego), among many others. He has recently produced work for organizations such as the BBC, the Guggenheim Museum and Carnegie Hall. Rachel Beth Anderson, a Sundance award wining cinematographer, has filmed around the world in several conflict zones including Libya, Syria, Afghanistan, Egypt, Turkey, and South Sudan, for CNN Heros, PBS Frontline, Human Rights Watch, and independent feature documentaries First To Fall and E-TEAM. After participating in a Fulbright sponsored Journalism program based in Cairo, Rachel graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Journalism school where she filmed and co-produced a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award winning doc Breaking Down Barriers. Rachel officially made the move to Cairo, Egypt in 2010. During the 2011 Egyptian revolution Rachel worked as a videographer and field producer for PBS Frontline. Her footage from the uprising is also included in multiple long form documentaries for BBC, POV and independent feature films Zero-Silence and Uprising. Rachels award winning documentary, First To Fall, was borne of a 7-month journey spanning the Libyan war. Her directorial debut film was a Gucci/TriBeCa grant recipient (2012) and had its World Premier screening at the International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA) in late 2013. Currently in the 2014 festival circuit.

I am a documentary filmmaker, NYC born, with family ties to Ukraine. I work as a freelance shooter and editor for different clients. In 2004 I made an award winning feature length documentary on the Orange Revolution in Ukraine called "The Orange Chronicles". You can see it in the URL below. More recently I created and produce a web series on the New York City rock and roll scene called NYC ROCKS TV. It's a behind the scenes look at the characters and personalities active in the contemporary scene. We are currently in our second season, which you can see at www.NYCROCKS.TV Currently there is a major uprising in Ukraine. What started out as demonstrations in support of Ukraine's President signing a trade agreement with the EU looks like it will be a serious attempt to overthrow the current Ukrainian government. The opposition has called for a nationwide strike and resignation of the current regime. As during the Orange Revolution, demonstrators have set up a camp and fortified Independence Square as well as blocked government buildings. President Yanukovych has not blinked and does not look likely to negotiate. I am looking to go back now to film current events.

It is not unusual for my films to come out of my personal experience. A crucial component for me is to address what it is to be living at a certain moment in history. The Andre Show is the story of a young boy with AIDS my husband and I adopted shortly before he died during this global medical epidemic. 71 West Broadway: Ground Zero, NY is the street address of our loft located about 2 blocks north of the World Trade Center. I began filming that story from our doorstep during the terrorist attacks. The film follows the impact on us as well as the immigrant small business owners on our block as we all struggled to move back home after the evacuation of the Red Zone. Invisible Revolution captured a revealing interview with a young racist, Ben Smith, just 2 weeks prior to the deadly shooting rampage he went on in Indiana and Illinois before shooting himself. Among the stolen lives was the much beloved Ricky Birdsong, the former Northwest University basketball coach. This is the core of my voice as an artist in which my true collaboration is with the characters within my film.

I am confident that my success in a wide spectrum of feature film and web video projects, in addition to my passion for reporting, makes me uniquely qualified to contribute for Storyhunter. Through years of experience working on feature films in Los Angeles as an editor, gaffer, and field recordist, I have developed the technical expertise necessary to enhance and distinguish my reportage. My experience ranges from editing a documentary about revolutionary journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal, to conducting interviews with government officials, to producing an on-site documentary for a multinational corporation. Most recently, I produced, shot and edited a documentary about the oil boom in Williston, North Dakota. This project showcases my technique as both a reporter and visual storyteller, as I was responsible for developing government sources, winning the trust of oil workers at the labor camp I was staying in, and then designing a visual narrative that honored the integrity of this community while also shining a light on the challenges they faced.

My name is Cal Hopwood, I am a freelance filmmaker with a focus in documentaries. I graduated in 2011 with a degree in filmmaking and am currently back at Champlain College in Burlington, VT getting my MFA in Emergent Media. I have produced multiple short narrative films, music videos and commercial projects. Currently I am working on a long term project called "The Pursuit: A Global Quest for Happiness", it is a documentary focusing on the key basics that allows for individuals to be happy and follows myself traveling to different parts of the world and spotlighting individuals helping their local communities in one of the 3 areas, healthcare, education and sustainability. I own my own professional camera equipment including a RED Scarlet and Canon 5D. My business partner, Jon Mendel, is a production sound recorder and together we co-founded and make up Dilation Films, a small video production.

Hi, my name is Ines and I'm a New York-based multimedia journalist. I currently freelance as a correspondent for the Irish Times New York correspondent, and at ABC News Nightline. I cover all kinds of stories, often on a tight deadline. In the past year Ive reported from three countries for two networks and an international newspaper; and produced two documentaries one about illegal Irish immigrants arriving in America, the other about the conservative turn among young American Catholic priests, for which I travelled to Italy as part of a Scripps Howard endowed reporting team. I've also covered the Syrian conflict for the past two years, and events like the US Presidential election and the 2012 Olympics Games in London. But if I had to sum up the kind of stories I hunt,the ones that are my favorite, it's character-driven narratives that point to bigger social-justice issues. I prefer "embed" style process pieces told through a strong person/people about things that matter to at least one person. For example, I'm currently working on a juvenile justice story and telling it through the journey of one 12-year-old in Indiana, charged with murder. Looking forward to hunting!

My name is Mathias Magnason and I am currently freelancing as an editor and documentary filmmaker in the New York area. Between 2010 and 2012 I worked as a director and consultant for the Chinese independant TV station NTDTV in New York creating award winning documentaries and TV series such as Journey To The East and Free China. Human Rights, and especially abuse of human rights in China has been a big part of my journalistic work for the last ten years. I have also done documentary film work in Africa through UN and SIDA, and SVT in sweden. My two most recent works was editing a one hour documentary for Swedish Television about a native swedish musician working to bring the ancient Sami folk song to life again, and a shorter segment for NHK Science and Nature in Japan. I would like to hunt for stories about ordinary people entering extraordinary circumstances, discovering new aspects of life and themselves in the process. Universal questions and issues channelled through what is deeply personal and specific, is what interest me the most.

She received a MA in News and Documentary Journalism from New York University and a BS in Film and Television from Boston University. I’m Alan Thompson and I’m an award winning filmmaker from Baltimore, MD currently living and working in New York City. After relocating to NYC more than 15 years ago, I’ve been working in documentary for just as long. As a director/producer/editor I’m fascinated with the lives of individuals who are often overlooked — along with their issues surrounding the environment, preservation and culture — and my goal is to present their stories in as authentic a manner as possible. My films have screened at various film festivals including SXSW, Big Sky Film Festival, Savannah Film Festival, Marfa Film Festival; my feature documentary This Land won Best Film at the Black Hills Film Festival. My feature documentary We Stand Alone was screened at the United Nations as part of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Flor de oro Tejada is a multidisciplinary filmmaker and creative producer based in the Bronx, New York. Flor’s documentary and narrative films explore the histories of Black, Indigenous, Latinx/e and LGBTQIA+ communities through fantasy, futurism, and healing. Geoffrey (he/him) is a NY based cinematographer born out of Portland Oregon. Following his studies in college, Geoff found work as a gaffer on numerous projects in the across the country ranging from music videos to national commercials and feature films. He eventually began gaffing for heavy hitting DP’s such as Kate arizmendi, Stuart Winecoff, Todd Martin, Matt Mitchell, Adam Newport- Berra and others. Geoffrey later in 2016 Advanced his craft to becoming a DP himself, creating and fleshing out narrative arcing projects in commercial and music videos for such artists as Meek Mill, Future, Nipsey Hussle; and commercial works for brands such as Wendys, Burberry, Nike, Adidas, Samsung and many more. Boris Shirman is a first-generation American, whose family came from the former Soviet Union. Boris graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a degree in Photojournalism. Currently, he is based in Brooklyn, N.Y. working as Director of Photography and Editor recently left his position as Director of Photography and Editor at Fly on the Wall Productions. He collaborates with producers and editors to capture and edit content in order to create docu-styled stories. Interfacing with clients on location, in the studio, and remotely to set up and film interviews and capture B-roll content often working on strict deadlines, and managing multiple projects concurrently. Responsible for managing company equipment, maintaining and establishing company visual filming styles, managing freelance videographers, and training new hires. Boris Shirman is currently available for freelance. While recently his work has centered around branded content all of his visuals are still directly influenced by a documentary background in visual journalism. Brooke Saias (she/her) is an independent filmmaker, producer, and director based in New England. She collaborates with various organizations, institutions, production companies, and artists. She is also an Associate Producer with Arch+Bow Films supporting independent films with bold artistic vision. Recent credits include the feature documentary RICHLAND (Tribeca, 2023). In her independent film practice she explores issues of memory, identity, and diaspora. Her documentary short, Songs of the Sephardim in Izmir about the preservation of the Ladino language, premiered at the Boston Jewish Film Festival in November 2022 and is currently screening in festivals. She was recently awarded a 2023 Arts & Culture Community Impact Grant for her film in development exploring more of the Sephardic Jewish experience. She previously produced a collection of international documentary films for Compass Light Productions and worked as an award-winning video journalist for Education Week. Brooke is dedicated to making the documentary space more equitable and accessible. She was part of a team that helped establish The Video Consortium's first mentorship program sponsored by Sony. She has a graduate certificate in Documentary Studies from The Salt Institute and received a B.A. in Gender & Women’s Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
