Sam Wolson, is an immersive film director and photographer with editorial partners including National Geographic and The New York Times. He grew up on a flower farm in the suburbs of Detroit Michigan and is currently based out of Berlin, Germany. In 2017 he co-directed the VR film We Who Remain, which was the first character-driven VR film shot in an active war zone -- in the Nuba mountains of Sudan. It premiered at SXSW, won best VR film at SIFF and was a co-production between The New York Times, AJ+, and ARTE. Wolson also received a Google Jump Start camera grant in 2017 to work on a long-term project exploring the aftermath of the nuclear disaster in Fukushima Japan. Over the course of 2017 Wolson also shot several projects for the New York Times Daily 360 project. In 2018 he worked on a four part VR series for National Geographic on the Okavango Delta called the Okavango Experience which documented a group of conservationist on an expedition canoeing across the Okavango Delta in Botswana. In 2019 he was part of teams that received a National Geographic Society grant entitled Documenting Human Migrations and a Journalism 360 Night Foundation grant for immersive journalism exploring the use of field deployable volumetric video. My name is Elijah Kanyi, a Filmmaker. Born and bred in Mathare Slum, one of the biggest slums in East Africa, I have learnt many life lessons and witnessed so many injustices. Being born in a slum is like being born in the wild; life there is a classic case of survival for the fittest. I have seen it all. One of the best things i have gotten from Mathare are good friends who have helped raise my life's standards, reminded me of my essential purpose and challenged me to be the best version of myself. I am who i am today because they give me the courage and confidence to tell their stories through the lens- a cameraman. My biggest motivation for taking this line of work came from what the media aired about Mathare. There were many stories to be told but the slum residents did not trust the reporters because they were strangers to them. As a resident of Mathare Slum, it is easier for me to source for stories ranging from corruption in the constituency development fund to robbery and police brutality. I have gained the trust of the residents and they call upon me to air their grievances and hardships.

Director, cameraman and colourist Joan Poggio hails from Cali, Colombia, the “salsa capital” of the world. Instead of dancing, he gravitated towards visual story telling by writing and drawing comic books at an early age, and later on by making short films with his friends. In 2000, he graduated from Colombian University Unitec, where he wrote a thesis about the Future of Digital Cinema, in spite of loving film and having shot on 16mm at length. After a short stint in the advertising world, Joan soon joined Explora Films in Bogotá as editor of “Southern Wings”, a documentary about the aviation history of Latin America for Discovery Channel. Over the following years he not only edited but did camerawork and directed in different projects at Explora. In 2004 he traveled to Kenya as associate producer and cameraman for the Animal Planet series “Bacilos Africa”. Having fallen in love with Kenya, Joan moved to Nairobi immediately after finalising and delivering the series in 2005. The following seven years saw Joan work on more than 100 different documentaries and short films for the United Nations, Research Centres and NGOs in Nairobi. Filming around 25 African countries in remote areas with little resources and tight deadlines helped Joan become better at sniffing a good story and shooting quickly and efficiently. Although digital had enabled his work over the years, it was not until 2012, when Joan bought into a cutting edge Red camera package, that he felt he finally had at his fingertips the kind of tools he had foreseen in his University thesis project. These new tools enabled him to work in small crews without having to compromise quality. In 2012 he went back to working on long form documentary for the international market, and also moved on to filming feature films, music videos and television commercials. Since then, most notably he has worked as cinematographer on documentaries dealing with the ivory and rhino horn crisis such as “Gambling on Extinction” and “The Last Animals”; on feature films “Ni Sisi” dealing with the topic of Kenyan post-election violence, and “Watatu” on the radicalization of Muslim youth in Mombasa. For four years he shot “Gun Runners” a film about two warriors from Northern Kenya who trade their AK-47s for running shoes and the Kenyan dream of marathon running. In 2017 he was nominated for Best Cinematography in a Feature Length Documentary for “Gun Runners” by the Canadian Academy of Cinema. His most recent cinematography work on “Silas”, a documentary about a tireless crusader Silas Siakor fighting illegal logging, has just debuted in Toronto International Film Festival. At present Joan is working on the development of several projects as a director/cinematographer. He continues to live in Nairobi with his family and is constantly traveling around Africa and the globe telling unique and exciting stories. He meets each project and its challenges with attention to detail, dedication and excitement.

These stories are currently being aired on KTN news under the programs, “AFRICA MEANS BUSINESS” and a travel show “ON THE ROAD” Examples of events I have covered include the 2013 presidential elections, the Westgate attack in Nairobi, the 2015 global entrepreneurship summit and US President Obama's Visit in Nairobi, the 2015 Papal visit in Nairobi, the 2015 wildebeest migration in Maasai Mara and Kenya’s 2016 historic ivory burn. I am currently a freelance journalist producing human interest feature stories and documentaries.

I studied at Daystar University and further honed my production skills at the post-production lab of Berlinale talent campus in Germany as well as Maisha Film lab in Uganda. In the past 11 years, I have worked in KBC TV, Video Production companies as well as media NGOs namely GNPI-Africa, FilmAid International, Farm Concern International and most recently, Storyline Network which I co-founded with a fellow producer. In these places I have worked in the capacity of video director, editor, camera operator, script writer, production manager, senior producer and studio manager. I have done productions in various genres including: a feature film, short films, video kits, documentaries, docu-dramas, TV dramas and music videos. I have filmed extensively in various parts of Kenya as well as in Zambia, Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Germany. I have managed and produced for diverse organizations including; UNESCO, UNHCR, WFP, Population Service Kenya, Tearfund, EPTF, Windletrust, IFRC (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies), Refunite, IRC (International Rescue Committee), UBS (United Bible Societies), ICL (I Choose Life), AKCL (All Kids Can Learn - Zambia), HIAS Kenya (Hebrew Immigration Aid Society), Swiss Tropical and Public health institute (Swiss TPH) in different parts of Africa as well as different counties in Kenya. My first feature film, which I co-directed, Unseen Unsung Unforgotten, received 8 nominations and won two awards in the Kalasha Film and TV Awards Festival in Kenya. Most recently, my short film, “Hooded” was nominated for best short film in the 2017 Zanzibar International Film Festivals awards.

Every writer, every storyteller is a believer in something.. I believe in truth, justice, the power of the human spirit and shared experience. A story of 3 minors defiled by the Bishop’s driver in Sultan Hamud, Makueni County in Kenya, police collaborated with the accused hence justice delayed….featured the story and the law took its course with the minors sponsored by a charity home.. I would tell mum that one day I would report in television and radio which have already done for Radio Maisha and KTN (Kenya Television Network) based in Kenya. Years later trained as a journalist, a diploma holder in journalism and media law. In September 2009 I joined KNA (Kenya News Agency) as an intern, where I specialized in writing. Months later in January 2010 I ventured in to the field of camera work where I correspondent for KTN for over five years. I honed my skills in doing different stories Politics, Health, Entertainment, Sports, Science, Education and features.
