I earned a journalism degree from the University of Florida and began my career in newspapers, where I worked for nearly 15 years. Jonathan Isaac Jackson is a Managing Partner at The Colored Section, along with Philip Williamson Jr. The Colored Section is a Creative Agency and Independent Film Production Company based in New Orleans and Philadelphia, specializing in creating short form content and films, independently distributing them internationally through streaming sites like REVRY and Amazon. Hi there! I am a young French and Colombian documentarian currently based in Washington DC with the will to keep moving. I studied Sociology in Paris and Visual Anthropology in the city of Barcelona where I co-directed my first short documentary. I have worked for the Margaret Mead Film Festival, a documentary festival, part of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. I simultaneously worked as a Production Assistant and Field Researcher for Loki Films, an independent documentary production company owned by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, two Oscar nominated directors. The main themes in my work surround ritual, memory and community. My intention is to follow in our every day life the unnoticed signs that can reveal a little more about our nature. I am currently working on a personal project about the last open air fish market in the entire United States, and on the pre-production of a short documentary about the religious statues that populate Colombian country roads.

Hi, I am applying through POV under the American Promise assignment. I'm Sam Hampton PhD, co-founder of Docs In Progress, a nonprofit located in the DC metro area dedicated to creating community through documentary. I have two recent films. Hidden Books the Art of Kumi Korf, about a Japanese American artist, received the CINE Golden Eagle Award. Mr. Stokes' Mission, the story of a Civil Rights educator and plaintiff of Brown v. Board of Education, has played at many film festivals and schools. My current project is a one-hour documentary titled, Transcending Surgeon. The film is about trauma surgeon Dr. Edward Cornwell III, who is the Chief of Surgery at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC. The film explores Dr. Cornwell's family upbringing, mentors, education and other guiding forces that led to his successful career. It does so in the context of African American pioneers in medicine, and that many of his patients represent the realities of another side of urban African American life, communities beset by poverty, inadequate education and and violence. Transcending Surgeon is a story that connects with viewers in a way that is real and thought provoking.

Gabriel Tolliver is a storyteller across media platforms. He is a graduate of UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and Long Island University's TV Writing and Producing Program. Gabriel has a BFA in Film/TV Production and a Masters of Professional Studies in Interactive Telecommunications from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. Gabriel is also a decorated US Army Veteran who served as an Army video journalist (46R) from 2007-2011 which included deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (09-10). Gabriel's range of interests and expertise have led to a diverse portfolio. He also co-wrote and directed, "FLEECING LED ZEPPELIN", a short crime caper film based on true events involving one of Rock's greatest unsolved heists. The film has been added to the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame's media archives and screened at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Harlem International Film Festival. He has created content over the years for MTV, VH1, Sesame Street, and Elektra Records. Gabriel co-authored the definitive pop culture book on trendy, ostentatious jewelry called BLING: THE HIP-HOP JEWELRY BOOK by Bloomsbury Press and wrote and co-produced MONDO BLACK, an artful 8 part documentary web series for PBS affiliate; Black Public Media. He directed behind the scenes and wrote show copy for the YO! MTV RAPS 30th Anniversary Experience at Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY in June 2018. Gabriel was also a 2018-2019 Writers Guild Foundation fellow in their Veterans Writers Workshop. I am a multimedia communicator who is deeply interested in, engaged in and committed to my community. I like to write and talk to people. The thing I miss most about being in a newsroom everyday is the breaking news. I currently work with nonprofits on communications, marketing and engagement. The stories I'm most interested in hunting and sharing are about: the impact and causes of poverty; weird people who do interesting things; kickass women and young people; and how things work/are made. One of my goals is to own a pair of glasses someday that have a camera and microphone hidden in them so that I can share all of the awesome stuff I see. In the meantime, I try to always have some sort of video device on me. I learned documentary-style shooting, writing and editing at NYU's graduate program for documentary filmmaking. Since then, I have started experimenting with ways to use editing, graphics and animation to supplement storytelling.
